That’s why the biggest breakthrough in modern medical science fascinates me so much. There are a number of well-controlled, human studies and over 850 peer-reviewed, scientific articles highlighting the miraculous benefits of the universe’s smallest element, located at the top left of the Periodic Table of Elements next to the number 1: Hydrogen. Slap two Hydrogen atoms together and you’ve got Molecular Hydrogen (H2), the tiny molecule that’s making big waves in medical science.
What Can Molecular Hydrogen Do?
Molecular Hydrogen (H2) is a selective antioxidant, scavenging only the most toxic free radicals while avoiding those which are essential to the body.
H2 reduces excessive oxidative stress, but ONLY under conditions leading to the destruction and damage of our cells.
H2 can easily penetrate any cell, neutralizing certain intracellular free radicals that most other antioxidants are unable to reach.
H2 can easily cross the blood-brain barrier and enter neurons to effectively neutralize oxidative stress and combat brain inflammation.
H2 activates the NRF2 pathway, the body’s most powerful antioxidant self-defense system against free radicals.
H2 reduces excess free radical formation by down-regulating the NADPH oxidase system when necessary.
H2 helps improve cell signaling, which has beneficial metabolic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cell death properties.
H2 regulates the expression of over 200 biomolecules, including over 1,000 variations of gene expression.
H2 down-regulates the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are involved with promoting systemic inflammation.
The byproduct of the reaction between H2 and the toxic hydroxyl radical is nothing but pure water. No toxic byproducts whatsoever.
In this article, I’ll cut through the pseudoscience and product placement so prevalent in the health and wellness space to focus on the science behind the anti-aging, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, anti-cell death, and anti-allergenic effects of Molecular Hydrogen and its proven success in improving almost 200 different conditions in essentially every organ of the body.
First Things First…What Is Molecular Hydrogen?
Hydrogen is the smallest and most abundant element. In the scientific model of the origin of the universe, it was the first element to form after the Big Bang. It combines with Helium to create stars like our Sun, which uses a process called Hydrogen Fusion to light up the entire solar system and sustain life on Earth. In fact, the development of multicellular organisms from single-celled ones was powered by Hydrogen, and it is the key to the production of ATP energy within the mitochondria, commonly referred to as “the energy factory of our cells.” To say that Hydrogen is essential is an understatement: It is part of almost every molecule in your body, and the strong, Hydrogen bond between elements is one of the most important interactions that make biological molecules behave as they do.
Hydrogen’s place at the very beginning of the Periodic Table of Elements is due to its small size and simplicity compared to other elements, and it is precisely this small size and neutral charge that makes it such a unique and revolutionary medical therapy. Hydrogen is so small that it is able to effectively penetrate not only cell membranes but also the blood-brain barrier and even the cell nucleus. In fact, it is possibly the only antioxidant that can reach the inside of the mitochondria, where studies show it protects DNA and enhances mitochondria health.
Molecular Hydrogen is Hydrogen in its gaseous state. Hydrogen is extremely reactive and almost immediately bonds with another Hydrogen atom to form Molecular Hydrogen or H2. Peer-reviewed scientific research proves that there are at least three main properties of Molecular Hydrogen that enable it to have such powerful therapeutic effects:
1. Antioxidant Power
Antioxidants have been a buzz word for as long as I can remember, with a new product or superfood marketed every hour for its miracle-like antioxidant power. But what is oxidation, and why do we need antioxidants?
Oxidative stress is responsible for the creation and progression of pretty much every disease — even aging itself. You’ve seen oxidation happen right before your eyes when you cut an apple in half and it starts to turn brown, and the same process is taking place in our bodies simply by breathing Oxygen. Oxygen is essential for life, but it’s also highly toxic, and a small percentage of the Oxygen we breathe turns into free radicals and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) that damage our body over time.
Additionally, as we age and are subjected to various environmental toxins, these damaging free radicals are elevated to levels beyond what our bodies can normally handle. Some of the body’s built-in antioxidants such as glutathione struggle to keep up, and we experience oxidative stress. This puts us at risk for infection, injury, inflammation, disease, and a host of problems.
Enter Molecular Hydrogen or H2 gas. While H2 doesn’t scavenge or neutralize all free radicals, it neutralizes the worst of the free radicals: the hydroxyl radical. In this way, H2 acts as a selective antioxidant by reducing only the most toxic oxygen radicals while leaving those which actually provide benefits untouched. H2 stands out against all other antioxidants because there are absolutely no negative byproducts of its neutralization of free radicals. When Molecular Hydrogen (H2) links up with a toxic hydroxyl radical (OH), it disperses into two new molecules with the composition H2O. It actually converts toxic oxygen radicals to water, hydrating your cells in the process.
When you exercise you intake a lot more Oxygen, and up to 2% of that Oxygen you inhale turns into free radicals and Reactive Oxygen Species. But some of these ROS are important in mediating the therapeutic benefits of exercise by activating mitochondrial biogenesis. H2 is so special because it scavenges toxic free radicals like hydroxyl without disturbing these other ROS that activate transcription factors responsible for the benefits of exercise. It reduces the level of toxic hydroxyl radicals but ignores important biological signaling molecules such as superoxide, nitric oxide, and hydrogen peroxide.
A molecule that can selectively reduce toxic radicals without disturbing beneficial radicals is essentially unheard of. Consider Vitamin C, for example. It is a great antioxidant but it is not selective and therefore can neutralize not only cytotoxic radicals but also beneficial signaling molecules, so you end up not getting any benefits of exercise that are mediated by those specific ROS.
What Molecular Hydrogen does in the body isn’t limited to direct scavenging of free radicals. For example, in a double-blinded placebo controlled trial in rheumatoid arthritis, H2 had a residual effect that continued improving the disease symptoms for four weeks after it was administered. Many cell studies show that pre-treatment with H2 has marked beneficial effects even when the assault (e.g. toxin, radiation, injury, etc.) is administered long after all the Hydrogen has dissipated out of the system.
2. Activation Power
Because our bodies experience so much oxidative stress, we have a built-in antioxidant system to neutralize free radicals. You may have heard of glutathione, which has recently become a popular supplement due to its antioxidant power. Glutathione is part of the body’s natural antioxidant system. Like Molecular Hydrogen, it neutralizes toxic free radicals in the body. Unlike Molecular Hydrogen, it neutralizes both harmful and beneficial free radicals, such as those created when you exercise. It also does not effectively penetrate the cell nuclei, and it can increase or decrease to unsafe levels in response to various factors.
One of the impressive ways Molecular Hydrogen functions is through selective activation of cell-signaling pathways that contribute to a wide variety of antioxidant, detoxification, and cell survival genes. For example, it’s able to activate the nrf-2 pathway, which is sometimes pronounced “nerf 2”. It sounds like your favorite toy gun from childhood, but it’s actually a transcription factor responsible for increasing your body’s own antioxidants like glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and other protective enzymes and proteins. The nrf-2 pathway is very protective and can be activated during exercise, for example, to boost the body’s endogenous antioxidants.
Exercise creates inflammation and oxidation in the body but also activates the nrf-2 pathway to increase endogenous antioxidant production, creating a positive fitness response. By taking normal antioxidants, we actually negate or even abolish the benefits of exercise. Studies have shown that ingestion of high levels of antioxidants can negate exercise training, prevent increased insulin sensitivity, or even hamper mitochondrial biogenesis.
The fascinating thing about the way Molecular Hydrogen activates the nrf-2 pathway and subsequently induces the antioxidant response element (ARE) pathway is that it is very selective and only does so under conditions where the cell is experiencing abnormally high levels of oxidative stress. Glutathione, hydrogen peroxide, nitric oxide, etc. are all very tightly regulated. If they get too high, damage ensues, and H2 can help reduce those levels. But if you were to take a normal, healthy cell that has acceptable levels of glutathione and the other enzymes, and you administer Molecular Hydrogen, the levels would not change. No increase or decrease would be measured because the levels are already in homeostasis. In other words, H2 goes only where it is needed, activating the increase of additional antioxidant enzymes without suppressing the natural hormesis effect, which is the very specific range at which free radicals created during exercise actually provide benefits.
Both exercise and Molecular Hydrogen activate the nrf-2 pathway. When we look at the metabolic pathways that are activated by H2 and by exercise, we see a lot of parallels. Exercise increases the NAD+, the NADH ratio and electron energy carrier system, which are very important for anti-aging. H2 also does that. Exercise activates the PGC-1 Alpha, which leads to mitochondrial biogenesis and a lot of other benefits. H2 also increases the PGC-1 Alpha. The list goes on, and we see that Molecular Hydrogen can imitate the benefits of exercise without producing toxic free radicals in the process. In fact, it even reduces the toxic free radicals that are produced by increased oxygen intake during exercise.
3. Cell Signaling, Cell Metabolism, And Gene Expression
In addition to the scavenging of highly toxic hydroxyl radicals and/or activation of the nrf-2 pathway, Molecular Hydrogen reduces oxidative stress and the formation of free radicals via a cell modulating effect. These cell modulating effects of H2 govern its anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, and anti-obesity effects.
Molecular Hydrogen has been shown to decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce the activation of inflammatory mediators. Additionally, it has a beneficial impact on obesity and metabolism by increasing the expression of other genetic expressions. Drinking Hydrogen-rich water is proven to stimulate energy metabolism as measured by O2 consumption and CO2 production. All in all, over 200 biomolecules are altered by H2 administration, including over 1,000 gene expressions. This is some serious Gattaca stuff.
The cells that are repeatedly exposed to inflammatory mediators will have the genes that code for inflammatory response switched on, and thus be in a constant state of inflammation. This leads to diseases and health conditions that are strongly linked to inflammation, including asthma and cardiovascular diseases. H2 affects gene expression by modulating molecules that have a direct effect on gene expression. It is anti-inflammatory in acute conditions, but it is also a potential epigenetic modifying agent, switching off certain genes that code for chronic pain and inflammation.
So Just How Good Is Molecular Hydrogen?
Molecular Hydrogen proves itself an effective and safe therapy in almost 200 different disease models. It has immediate medical applications to help with many of the current health crises, including 8 out of 10 of the top disease-causing deaths as listed by the Centers for Disease Control. Clinical studies suggest that ingestion of Hydrogen-rich water is beneficial for metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. Another 1-year placebo-controlled study suggested that Hydrogen-rich water is beneficial for Parkinson’s disease, while other clinical studies suggest significant benefits for rheumatoid arthritis, mitochondrial dysfunction, exercise performance, athletic recovery time, wound healing, reductions of oxidative stress from chronic Hepatitis B, improvements to blood flow, periodontitis, in dialysis, and even the quality of life in patients receiving radiotherapy for tumors, and others. There have been an additional 15+ human studies completed with promising results, which are in the process of manuscript preparation and publication through the peer-reviewed process.
If you want to boost your athletic performance and decrease recovery time in the safest way possible, you will be very excited by the proven benefits of H2 in this area. One particular double blinded, placebo-controlled crossover control study was performed on professional soccer players. It was discovered that drinking Hydrogen-rich water was effective at preventing early fatigue and decreasing lactate production as well as improving overall performance. Furthermore, the ingestion of Hydrogen-rich water did not decrease the markers of oxidation, suggesting that it did not negatively impact the therapeutic effects of exercise.
Hydrogen improves the efficiency of the mitochondria, those little powerhouses of the cell that are responsible for most of our body’s energy production. When we exercise, we primarily rely on mitochondria for ATP energy production. As we start to exercise more intensely, we start to get tired and have to start relying on glycolysis, which leads to high levels of lactic acid production. One study done on participants drinking Hydrogen-rich water showed that lactate levels were reduced even though exercise intensity stayed the same, which suggests that the mitochondria was functioning better. Other studies show that H2 was able to help improve soft tissue injury and decrease recovery time after exercise, while another study showed that Hydrogen-rich water helped prevent damage from inflammation and too much oxidative stress without minimizing its benefits. The study proved that Hydrogen is effective at decreasing delayed onset muscle soreness so that you could go exercise again sooner and continue getting the benefits of exercise while H2 neutralizes the harms of the additional oxidative stress.
While H2 improves many of the most serious conditions today, including diabetes, obesity, mitochondrial disease, heart conditions, and all kinds of inflammation, some of the most promising breakthroughs have been with neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s. My dad has Parkinson’s, so I’m always on the lookout for the latest breakthroughs in its treatment.
Levels of Hydrogen-producing bacteria are lower in people with various neurodegenerative problems. Intestinal bacteria already produce a certain amount of Hydrogen gas, and one of the targets of Hydrogen is to actually balance the gut microbiome, improving optimal homeostasis. By taking Hydrogen, we can maybe help improve the population of these certain bacteria to cause an inhibition of the pathogenic bacteria and an increase in the beneficial bacteria. This is exciting news, particularly as neurodegenerative conditions are climbing the charts of the top causes of death worldwide.
So does H2 cure cancer? Not necessarily. But interestingly enough, one of the proven influences of Molecular Hydrogen is its anti-apoptotic, or anti-cell death, effects. According to the National Cancer Institute, antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer. H2 is shown to have a suppressive or inhibitory effect on various cancer cell lines, such as colon cancer. Another human study showed that H2 helped negate some of the cytotoxicity and damage that occurs when taking normal chemotherapy drugs. That’s really important because chemotherapy is so harmful and damaging to the body. H2 being able to mitigate those toxic effects without altering the anti-tumor effects of the drug is very promising.
Cancer shuts down the mitochondria. Molecular Hydrogen is very efficient at inducing mitochondrial biogenesis and upregulating the activation of the mitochondria, maintaining mitochondrial membrane potential, and a lot of other benefits. So it’s possible that H2 administration to cancer activates the mitochondria, and in turn, the mitochondria realize the cell is cancerous and thus induces cell death. In this way, H2 could be very suppressive against cancer.
Who Needs Molecular Hydrogen?
While I rarely make this statement, the truth is simple: Everyone needs to be consuming Molecular Hydrogen on a daily basis. I’ve talked a lot about the dangers of nonnative Electromagnetic Fields, or EMFs. In today’s technological society we are bombarded from every angle by harmful EMFs being emitted by the devices we use regularly: cell phones and cell towers, wifi routers, Bluetooth devices. Even the smart meters attached to your home pulse every 60 seconds or so to send your electricity usage all the way across town to the electric company, and more and more people are arming their homes with “smart” alarms, thermostats, and other devices that are proven to deal critical blows to the most important organs and processes in the human body.
EMFs work on three distinct but interconnected levels: First, they work through the voltage-gated calcium channels, flooding your cells with calcium ions which mix with nitric oxide and or peroxynitrite, two extremely harmful free radicals. This flooding of calcium in your cells causes double-stranded DNA breaks and damages your mitochondria, which are the body’s main source of energy production. We know that one of the most powerful ways in which Molecular Hydrogen works is as an antioxidant, significantly reducing the harmful effects of these toxic free radicals.
Second, EMFs suppress your body’s natural production of melatonin. Most people know melatonin as the sleep hormone. In this way, exposure to EMFs severely inhibits your body’s ability to get a restful sleep and to enter the deep sleep and REM sleep cycles, which are essential for physical and cognitive recovery. But even more importantly, melatonin is an important antioxidant that crosses the brain-blood barrier in order to flush toxins like Beta-Amyloid plaque and others that, if not cleared from the brain, lead to cognitive decline and neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. If you’ve ever experienced what is commonly referred to as “brain fog,” you’re likely experiencing the harmful effects of suppressed melatonin production and possibly at risk of developing neurodegenerative disease.
Third, EMFs entrain the brain into a very high stressful state. The negative impacts of stress on the body are well-established. In the same way we can use meditation to entrain the brain into blissful alpha and theta frequencies, or audio/visual entrainment (AVE) like I talk about in the Biohacker’s Guide, wifi/Bluetooth devices, cell phones, and smart meters and in-home devices all entrain the brain into a stressful state, creating symptoms of mental and physical anxiety such as irritability, heart palpitations, digestive issues, and insomnia.
Ingesting Molecular Hydrogen is an essential daily practice because it has been proven to mitigate about 80% of DNA and mitochondrial damage that occurs from EMFs.
Is It The Same As Alkaline Water?
Alkaline water, along with the concept of an alkaline diet, is becoming increasingly popular these days and often touted as a cure-all for every ailment there is. The truth is, there is little to no scientific evidence to back this up, and topics such as negative hydrogen ions, alkaline water, and others are highly subject to pseudoscientific claims. That said, there could be a link between early Molecular Hydrogen research and why some people mistakenly believe that alkaline water is beneficial.
When Hydrogen gas is dissolved in water, it does not alter the structure of the water in any way. You’re just adding gas to the water before you drink it. This means that you can take H2 and dissolve it into acidic water, alkaline water, or whatever, and it’ll have no effect on the pH directly. It does not convert into protons and electrons; it’s just Hydrogen gas, and it will stay that way. The way to make H2 is by electrolysis: You put a battery in the water and all of a sudden you start seeing bubbles, one off the cathode and the other off the anode, which is Hydrogen and Oxygen, respectively. When research into Molecular Hydrogen first began, these electrolysis units were making alkaline water, and a lot of people were getting benefits thinking, incorrectly, it was the alkaline property of the water that was making them healthy. But really it was the Hydrogen gas that was produced from the alkalizer. And now many studies have shown that when you take the Hydrogen gas and remove it from alkaline ionized water, all the benefits are eliminated.
This is an important clinical finding because the medical community knew that the alkaline claim never made sense. And the scientists who did the research never claimed the benefits were from the alkaline property of the water because it doesn’t make any sense. It’s another reason why it’s so important to stick to scientific facts when considering new health interventions.
How Long Has This Stuff Been Around? Is It Safe?
The medicinal properties of Hydrogen appear to be promoted as early as 1798, and one of the very first publications regarding its use appeared in 1888. But it wasn’t until 1975, when The Journal of Science published a Baylor University study on Molecular Hydrogen as a possible treatment for cancer, that the mainstream scientific community took notice. In that study, it was discovered that hyperbaric Hydrogen therapy was effective at reducing melanoma tumors in mice. While the results were astonishing, the impractical application of a hyperbaric chamber in normal life and clinical practice was probably responsible for the lack of continued mainstream research into H2 as a viable therapy.
Then in 2007, Molecular Hydrogen’s profile ascended to a new level with a study published in Nature Medicine which demonstrated H2’s selective antioxidant properties. In that study, it was demonstrated that administration of Hydrogen gas via inhalation or ingestion of Hydrogen-rich water was very neuroprotective and prevented toxic damage from injury induced via middle cerebral arterial occlusion in rats. When injuries like this occur, you have low blood flow to the brain, lots of free radicals, and high levels of oxidative stress that end up causing necrosis, cell death, and all sorts of other problems. Molecular Hydrogen was very effective at preventing that from happening. Since then, there have been hundreds of articles on H2’s therapeutic potential in improving almost 200 diseases in basically every organ of the body with, astonishingly, no serious side effects discovered so far.
The thought of Hydrogen gas might conjure up images of the Hindenburg airship disaster but fear not. Even during inhalation therapy, the concentration of Molecular Hydrogen used is usually between 2-3%, well below the flammability level of 4.6%. It’s precisely the safety of H2 that proves it to be such a superior therapy in over 850 peer-reviewed studies. Hydrogen is the primordial element that started the universe and powered the evolution of life on Earth. It’s involved in nearly every process in the body in some way, and the biomedical research is showing us just how essential it really is.
It is incredibly uncommon to find a treatment that has both high therapeutic potential and a high safety profile, but Molecular Hydrogen appears to fit this combination. Over millions of years of evolution, plants and animals have developed a mutualistic relationship with Hydrogen-producing bacteria. The bacteria in your gut actually produce lots of H2 when you ingest fiber — some people more than others, if you catch my drift — so it’s no stranger to the stomach. Hydrogen is part of almost every molecule in your body: DNA, proteins, sugars, fats, etc. We’re always exposed to H2 in our cells, in our breath, and in our blood, so the administration of small amounts of more H2 is very safe.
The most important and basic thing to know about Molecular Hydrogen is that it negates the toxicity of Oxygen. The extremes of Oxygen and Hydrogen provide a sort of yin-yang balance between oxidation and reduction, which is vital to maintaining homeostasis in all life forms. When Hydrogen and Oxygen react together, you form water, the ingredient for life. The most toxic of all free radicals, the hydroxyl radical, has a chemical composition of OH. When Molecular Hydrogen (H2) links up with toxic OH radicals, the byproduct of the reaction is nothing but pure water, H20. No toxic byproducts whatsoever.
Additionally, Hydrogen gas has also been used in deep sea diving since the 1940s to prevent decompression sickness. Hundreds of human studies for deep sea diving have shown that inhalation of H2, at orders of magnitude greater than what is needed for therapeutic use, is well-tolerated by the body with no chronic toxic effects.
Okay, I’m Interested. So How Do I Try It?
Molecular Hydrogen is a gas, and it can be administered ingestion of Hydrogen-rich water, hyperbaric treatment, rectal insufflation, and other methods. But if you don’t have access to a hyperbaric chamber and you’re comfortable blasting H2 gas up your butt, the most convenient (and often most effective) method of ingesting Molecular Hydrogen is via hydrogen-infused water. And just because you get a lot more Hydrogen gas by inhalation does not necessarily mean greater benefits. In fact, a 2012 study done with H2 and Parkinson’s disease showed that drinking Hydrogen-rich water was more effective than inhalation at preventing the development of Parkinson’s disease.
There are three main ways to dissolve Molecular Hydrogen in water: using a small machine that generates high concentrations of H2 in water; using Hydrogen-producing tablets that react with water to create H2, or purchasing ready-to-drink Hydrogen-rich water that comes in an aluminum can to prevent H2 leakage.
When evaluating the merits of a Molecular Hydrogen product, the most important parameter to consider is H2 concentration measured in parts per million (or PPM). Ready-to-drink hydrogen-rich water or flavored beverages are popular due to their ease of use, but they are hardly the best of the options. They usually come in at around 1 ppm and cost anywhere between $3 and $5 a pop. Due to the negligible amount of Molecular Hydrogen and the high price tag, it’s best to avoid these altogether if you’re serious about not wasting your time or money on marketing ploys.
The second option is Hydrogen tablets, which have the potential to create the highest ppm of any Molecular Hydrogen product on the market, coming in anywhere between 0.8 and 10 ppm on average, depending on the formula, the method of preparation, and quality of the product. As you can see it’s quite a range, which is why choosing a quality product is important to ensure you’re getting the maximum therapeutic benefits of H2 and not wasting your efforts or hard-earned cash. These tablets require 8 to 12 ounces of water and usually take one to six minutes to bubble into sweet, drinkable H2.
The best option is to get your very own Hydrogen-producing machine, which will give you a lifetime supply of as much Hydrogen-rich water as you can drink. When it comes to Molecular Hydrogen, the more the better, and you’ll never have to worry about overdoing your H2 consumption. Your body will always use only what it needs and expel any excess H2 through your breath.
This is the obvious choice for true Biohackers who are dedicated to getting all the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-aging benefits that Hydrogen can offer.
